"Like any artist, my work reflects that which holds the greatest inspiration for me. This collection was my love song to America. It comes from the book I co-authored with Hugh Sidey in 1975, These United States. It was a troubled time in our country's history; the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal were open wounds, and the Cold War was still a reality. But with the celebration of the nation's Bicentennial just ahead, it seemed to me to be a time to focus on the many positive aspects America had to offer: her beauty, vitality, and diversity. In all fifty states and the District of Columbia, I found those qualities in abundance."
