She was also a human rights activist, and the force behind “Jehan’s Laws”, a series of laws that gave women rights that they had not had before in Egypt. An architect by training, Maroon had a way of balancing lighting, subject and surroundings in creating his compositions. Sometimes less was more; sometimes more was more. Understanding the artistry of buildings both inside and out, while also understanding how buildings work within a wider landscape helped Maroon to use them or even use natural settings to make a statement about a subject. This versatility also allowed him to problem solve on the spot and always get his shot. He worked in the age of film photography when one had to wait days or even weeks before knowing if a shoot had been a success. And kings and presidents do not do reshoots.
